When I attired myself in orange stockings, a green tank top, a white pashmina wrapped around my waist as a rather short and inappropriate skirt, a yellow belt, red gloves, and a blue hair bow on the side of my head, my flatmate asked me, "Are you seriously going to take public transport dressed like that?" She did get a good laugh looking at me before I went out, however!
So I made my way down to Wimbledon, which is really a bit of a suburb of London. When I made it to the house in question, I had to admit that it was nice that they had an entire house to themselves, but with four housemates, I hope it's a really cheap place to be worth living that far out! Of course I'm always going to prefer where I live, so close to the heart of London, where everything is really happening. I love that when friends invite me out, I can frequently walk to where the party is, rather than having to trek for nearly an hour just to get there...
Despite arriving a half-hour late, I was still one of the early arrivals at the party, so we just stood around drinking wine and things making idle chit-chat, although as more and more people showed up, things got more interesting.
At first we just admired each other's outfits, but as more and more people arrived, we decided to start trading clothes with each other. Apparently you had to decide relatively early on what colour you were going for so you could work on your theme, so I went for "orange", mostly because I figured it would be best if I could avoid having to change out of my orange tights. Eventually I got an orange top, and orange belt, orange leg warmers, and an orange scarf, but I couldn't find anybody with orange bottoms, so I didn't quite make it. Still, it was worth it, just to see my friend Matt wearing a yellow headband and a yellow girl's top, and then asking, "Where do your boobs go in this?" Luckily, I'm a quick thinker, and got some cups to stick in his shirt to demonstrate the concept to him. He then seemed absolutely facinated by all of it, trying out how his "boobs" would look if they were saggy and he was a 90-year old woman, or how they stacked up compared to the other girls actually there.
I ended up having to trade my green top for an orange top, and so changed in the typical girl way, of putting the new top over the old top, and then wiggling out of the old top once I had the new one on. Which of course led my friend Lucas to exclaim, "How do girls do that? It's weird, it's like every girl knows how to change her top without taking her shirt off!" I must admit, I never thought of it as being a particularly feminine skill, but it really comes in handy when you have to change your clothes at a party!
Interestingly enough, one of the conversations I got into with Matt and Lucas, was about living with girls and how much they want to talk all of the time. Lucas lives by himself, and was saying that he loved coming home to an empty flat every day where he can just chill out and unwind, but I was saying how I loved having my flatmate there, as it was great to have someone ask, "How was your day?" and just agonize about cute boys we like with. (This is undoubtedly why girls devote far more thought than is necessary to picking apart every detail of what a boy said or did in attempts to figure out what the boy is thinking. They just like talking about certain topics incessantly, and boys are always a popular one. But a male friend of mine warned me on the phone the other day, "Never try to figure out what boys are thinking, because they usually aren't thinking much." Wise advice, I think!) So interestingly enough, while the majority of my friends are boys, I still enjoy living with my female flatmate, as she is always good fun to talk to.
Finally, when it was just about time to catch the last Tube, Matt's sister and brother-in-law had arrived to give him a ride, so they dropped me off back at the Tube station so I could make my way home. I'm not sure if I looked better or even weirder to be wearing head-to-toe orange (with orange legwarmers over my knee-high boots), but it was definitely a fun night out!
