I really hadn't expected it to be anything other than a check-in call when my recruiter said she'd like to speak with me this afternoon. So you can imagine my shock when she started off by getting straight to the point: "The Capability Development team would like to offer you the Research Specialist role!"
I was so stunned, I was rather sputtering trying to think of what questions to ask (no pay raise, but no pay cut either, so I'll take it), and while she offered me the chance to sleep on it, I figured, "What's the point?" Not like the Dallas role was in serious consideration, so I just decided to go ahead and accept on the spot.
I then figured I needed to get the word out, so I updated my Facebook status. Wow, I hadn't realised how obsessively some people monitor Facebook, as my co-workers in Argentina all hit me with a 5-way IM chat conversation almost as soon as I pressed return. I spent a few more minutes tapping out quick messages to people, before I really had to leave to go to running.
Luckily, it turned out that I could take an Overground train to the pub, so I made it there in just 20 minutes, one of the easiest trips ever. I recognized the pub as one we'd been to before, and spent some time at the start collecting money from people.
Then went off on the run, which was a really good one, in that it was challenging enough, without being overly exhausting. Got back to the pub in a reasonable amount of time, collected more money from people, and then just settled in to chat with people and enjoy lots of hugs and congratulations from everyone who had heard the news. In many ways, there is no better way to celebrate good news than to share it with friends!
