Edinburgh with Jess

In the morning, Jess and I got up and walked up to Edinburgh Castle, where we only moderately looked in at the castle, but just mostly had fun people-watching. You see, this weekend in Edinburgh, the Six-Nations rugby tournament was going on, and Scotland was playing Wales. For some reason that meant that there were Welsh people everywhere in silly outfits, and I kept having to explain to Jess why people were wearing red, dragons, daffodils and leeks. Ah, those crazy Welsh!

We then strolled our way down the Royal Mile, and since we hadn't had breakfast, stopped in for lunch at a really great Scottish place that I remembered going to with the hash when we had been up here for the marathon. It was just as nice as I remembered, and so he had hot toddies along with real Scottish meals with plenty of haggis. I convinced Jess to try some, but she was definitely not as much of a fan of haggis as I was!

We walked all of the way down to Hollyrood House, and after I told Jess how picturesque the ruined abbey was, we decided to pay to take a tour. She really seemed to enjoy it, and I have to admit that she took some amazing photos of the abbey. Funny enough, I was able to figure out how to take the same stunning photos with my little point-and-shoot camera, but I really needed Jess's eye to point out where the good shot would be.

Then in the evening, we were due to meet up with our friends Margaret and Nigel for dinner. I actually met Margaret through Jess, as they used to be co-workers, and Nigel is Margaret's husband. I'm now definitely better friends with them than Jess is, but they are such lovely people that I was sure Jess would still enjoy an evening out with them.

We got to the pub to find the Scotland vs Wales game still being played (Scotland was getting slaughtered) and I did my best to try and explain the rules of rugby to Jess while also introducing her to British beer. (Warm, flat, bitter beer, which I've become really fond of, and thankfully Jess seemed to enjoy it too, about one of the only things about English cuisine that she liked!)

We had some haggis fritters (I thought they were delicious, but Jess gave me her leftovers), and an absolutely lovely dinner, until finally very late Jess and I walked home, full but satisfied we'd had an excellent day in Edinburgh!
