I found myself to be super-jealous of everyone who went to the Rally for Sanity the day before, and spent much of my morning reading news about the events of the day before. Oh, how much fun it would have been to be there!
Still, after a casual morning of hanging out with my folks, and eating leftovers from Patio, it was time to head to the airport. I was still pretty tired, having been home for only 24 hours, but it was good to be home, if only so briefly. My mother sent me off with some packed chicken salad sandwiches (I'd forgotten about how they don't feed you on domestic flights anymore), and we made it to the airport in plenty of time, one of the first times I'd ever come to the airport in the middle of the day. I'm such a night-time flyer.
On the plane, it was a two-rows of three configuration, with one aisle down the middle, and I found myself chatting to the man sitting by the window (I was on the aisle) while everyone boarded, a cute young pilot going to Salt Lake for a training session. Originally from Texas, he now lived in Puerto Rico because his airline had a hub there, and he wanted to live somewhere as "foreign" as possible. We had a lovely conversation, so I was a bit dissapointed when the passenger sitting in the middle seat arrived, effectively ending our conversation because it would have been quite rude to talk across her.
When I landed, I called for my car, and it turned out that I was sharing a town car with two folks working for GE, and so I basically ended up chatting to the driver for the duration of the trip.
It took us about an hour to get to St. Charles, where I was staying in the downtown hotel, the Hotel Baker. I was disappointed to not be staying in the Q-Center, but such is life. As I checked in, there was a couple there all in wedding finery (he in a tux, she in her full wedding gown), still with some glow-in-the-dark necklaces on, obviously tired from having just finished up their wedding reception. Although the key point to note here is that it wasn't quite 8 PM!! They were done with their wedding and all the partying already?
That turned out to be forboding of what was to come, for when I finally decided I was hungry and went in search of food, the entire town seemed to be closed down, as there was no place offering food anywhere. In the end, I just decided to eat my sandwiches, which my mother had so cleverly packed for me, and then head off for an early bedtime. Seems like they do things differently here in St. Charles!!
