I spent some more time packing and moving today, and got to talk to our cleaning lady when she arrived to say good-bye one last time. We actually had an interesting and random conversation when the cleaning lady all of a sudden asked me if I was married. When I told her no, that I didn't even have a boyfriend, she exclaimed with shock, "But with your face?" Kind of sweet, although I wonder if people who express astonishment at the fact that I'm single realise how it comes out. It's almost like, "You're so pretty, you must have a MAJOR personality defect to be single!"
We somehow got onto the topic of how she had an arranged marriage when she was 38, and although she didn't love him at the time, she "grew to love him", in some sort of platonic affection, from what I can gather. She got a daughter out of the marriage at least, so perhaps it wasn't a total loss.
Emily and I had agreed that I would skip the hash this evening (since it was cold and raining, not a hard prospect), and we'd have a last flatmate dinner together. I bought some vegetables and wine, while she was in charge of getting the chicken. I was kind of surprised when she didn't even arrive home until 8 PM, with a rather small and measly looking chicken. Obviously, I'd put way more effort into the wine selection...
But we did have a nice dinner together, just chatting about nothing in particular, the kind of idle random conversations we've always had. It's kind of weird, as I'd always seen them as being so friendly, but it was weird in that now there's always this undercurrent that I'm leaving.
In the end, good dinner, and a good night to stay in from the rain!
