After Heathrow had been shut down for days due to snow and freezing conditions, my flight left exactly on time on the 23rd, and I felt bad for my seatmate, who had been trying to leave town since the 21st. Really cool guy though, he was from Paraguay, yet had gone to university in the US and worked there for a while, but now lived and worked in the UK, where he'd been for the past 4 years. I generally have good luck with seatmates, more often than not sitting next to friendly, cute guys. Lucky me!
Had a nice Christmas Eve at home, and then on Christmas Day, my folks and I flew down to Orlando, FL, and then drove on to Miami. Again incredible good fortune, as on Boxing Day New York was hit with its worst blizzard in years, and over 2 feet of snow. Hence, we had a great time sunning ourselves down in Miami while the rest of New York dug itself out.
Then flew back on the 31st and spent the weekend at my friend's house in Pennsylvania. She has a 20-month old toddler who is absolutely adorable, and a husband in the military who has been gone for more or their marriage than he's been at home. He's currently on a year-long deployment in Japan, so she appreciates people who come visit and provide "grown-up conversation".
I think that had to be the craziest part of visiting my friend with the toddler, this idea that once you get married, all of the obsessing about boys and relationships is just OVER. Snap. Overnight. It was kind of amazing to me, to think of how much more mental energy I'd have if I didn't waste so much of it obsessing about boys. But then again, my friend just seems to obsess about her toddler, so maybe we're all going to obsess about something anyway....

The toddler decided I'm the coolest person ever, which was fun, although it does mean I had to go and hide whenever my friend wanted to try and get the kid to go down for a nap, as when I'm around it's too much fun to possibly go to sleep. Although on the upside, I managed to get the toddler to brush her teeth and blow her nose as long as I'm doing it, something my friend says she's never accomplished. Apparently I'm just so new and exciting, she'll do anything I'm doing.

I got my haircut whilst I was at home, and ended up having an interesting conversation with my hairdresser about dating yesterday (why is it that we always seek romantic advice from the people who cut our hair?) as she's been married, divorced, and is now dating again... Apparently she's been dating a super-nice guy she was friends with, but she laughingly told me, "If you saw him, you would not think he's my type!" Her description of him made him sound like the comic-book guy from the Simpsons, as she quite honestly assured me he's quite fat, while she is this stunning, skinny blonde. But she said, "I think in the past I always was concerned about how much I liked the guy, and not about how much he liked me. Now I'm with a guy who just adores me, and I'm really happy. And I think he's attractive now, even though of course I didn't think so at first!" Interesting advice, to be paying attention to how much the guy likes you...
I think it's all about the 20-80 rule. Which is to say, in 20% of cases, we meet someone and we're attracted to them instantly, and they are to us, and everything works out hunky dory. And we look for that every time, but honestly it only happens 20% of the time. The other 80% of the time, we meet someone who seems nice, and we have to get to know them to figure out if we like them or not. And I think that's what's going on with all of these guys. They like you, sure (every single guy I've ever met says that he's attracted to his female friends on some level, even if he would never do anything for fear of ruining the friendship). Yet, I think they're really just trying to figure it out, same as you are a lot of the time.
Another interesting development happened just while I was working from home in New York, and one of the guys in my running club e-mailed out to announce he was organizing a beer pong tournament in a few weeks (classy, yes?) and was looking for people to form teams and join up. And the Giant Australian just e-mailed me and the tournament organizer, saying that he'll come only if I agree to be his partner. Kind of funny, because I know this chap likes me, yet he's never made a move... Decent guy, to be honest, a very tall, incredibly fit, beautiful blue eyes, quite intelligent and even owns black-tie. Yet he's Australian and has a sense of humour which sometimes strikes me as overly harsh, I'm never sure if his misogynistic jokes are reflect his true thoughts or just misguided attempts at humour. Hence, there's potential there, but he's definitely part of the 80%. Still, I replied saying I'd be happy to be his partner, so we'll see what happens next...
