Valentine's Day Pub Quiz

Ah, Valentine's Day! The day that single people are supposed to hate, but I think it's just a day to freak out people in relationships too. I didn't hear from the Tall South African today, but didn't even think about it until he texted me the next day to apologise for not wishing me a Happy Valentine's Day the day prior! (Something about having a bad day so he hadn't been thinking about it, but it was a long story and he was feeling bad to have missed Valentine's Day on me. Even a day late, I think we'll give him credit for thinking of it at all!)

In the end, although I was tempted to stay in and just avoid the day, I went out to a pub quiz with my friends Zhan and Brianna, who are a couple. I laughed with Brianna about how she was getting to spend her romantic Valentine's Day, and she just chuckled and said that she likes Zhan for many other reasons, as if she knew going in that he isn't the romantic sort...

I did find it funny as when I went to the bar at the mid-point break to get a round (we'd scored 15 points in the first half!), I ended up getting chatted up by this guy at the bar while I waited. He seemed sweet, but rather chubby, short, and by his own admission doesn't go out much. But then his friends were so amazed to see him chatting to a girl, that they insisted on being allowed to get a picture. (No really). Poor guy, as it seemed like he had a hard enough time talking to girls as it is, and then his friends do that to him? But I was a good sport and posed for a photo...and then made my escape back downstairs to my team. Glad I had that excuse!

Although the boy had been surprised that a girl like me would be out without a boyfriend on Valentine's Day. Luckily the bartender brought our drinks back quickly enough that I didn't really have to get into it with him, but I know this comes up frequently, where people can't believe I'm single. And I don't want to point out the embarrassing comeback, "Well, it's not like I go out with every guy who asks!" Seriously, why when a girl is attractive, good-looking, smart and witty, do people assume she's single because nobody is asking her out? Why on earth is every girl assumed to be so desperate for a boyfriend that she'll go out with any guy who asks?

All in all, a lovely Valentine's Day (we came in 3rd in the pub quiz), with some good times with friends, a bit of flattery for the ego, and surviving yet another overwrought holiday...
