The Squash Game That Wasn't

I was up this morning at 6:30 AM, since I had to be in the office by 8:30 AM today. Given how much the Tall South African teases me about being lazy, I texted him as I was heading into the Tube to point out that I was already awake and on my way into work. He wrote back almost instantly teasing me, and I have to conclude that he must be a morning person, because he's a lot more fun in the mornings...

I made it to the breakfast meeting presentation I was signed up for, although despite having two hours for this presentation, we ran out of time to get to the part I'd really been interested in, so they said we'd all have to reschedule another time. Kind of disappointing, particularly as the breakfast had basically been yogurt and some fruit. Healthy, but not exactly filling!

After work, I was due to play my friend Doro at squash, and so had dragged all of my squash gear into work with me. Particularly after surviving rush hour on the Tube with all of that stuff, I was then crushed when right before I was due to leave the office, she e-mailed to say she was stuck in a meeting with a visiting researcher from Paris who had come over specifically to meet with her. I realise it was not at all her fault that she got delayed, but annoying still the same.

Still, given that I'd already dragged all of my squash gear out with me, I figured I might as well go and hit the ball around the squash courts by myself. Yet when I got to the club, changed and went to check the squash schedule, it turned out that we'd been booked for a 17:45 game, not an 18:15 one! So we never would have made it anyway, and since both courts were full with other people playing, there was no opportunity for me to play.

Still, as long as I was at the club, I figured I might as well make use of my time. I'd had a book that I'd had out since November, so I finally returned it, and while I was there, checked out another three books. Admittedly I wanted to check out about 16 books, so I found myself a chair in the silent library and just curled up in front of the fireplace to read the first chapter of each to figure out which ones were actually worth taking out. A group came through where I knew the girl with them from the Lansdowne, and I recognised one of the guys with her but could not come up with a name. Embarrassing, but whatever. Later though, one of the newbies from the O&C came through, and so I spent some time chatting to him, and we had a good laugh about the fact that Doro wasn't there, as he was part of the group last Wednesday who were commenting, "We constantly see messages from this Doro person, but we have no idea who she is! She's a ghost!"

Finally I came home with my new books, chatted to the Tall South African for a bit, and then got a Skype call from my cousins with the best news: They're pregnant!! They've been married since 2008, and she'd been looking quite broody whenever she had been playing with my niece anymore, so I guess it makes sense that this was in the cards. The baby is due in August, so he/she will be almost exactly two years younger than my niece. I'm so happy and excited for them! (Apparently they passed the first trimester mark yesterday, and so I was one of the first people they'd told besides their parents).

Then had another guy pop up on Facebook and say, "Did I see you at the club tonight?" Ah yes, another familiar face where I couldn't place a name who I passed in the hallway... Who then started suggesting that we needed to meet up for drinks. And I'm never sure what to say when these guys suggest that, as maybe they're just being friendly? And I like to be friendly. But when I have no particular interest in them, I worry about leading them on. And this seems to be happening a LOT recently... Advantages of having a boyfriend, you can always just throw that grenade of "my boyfriend" into the conversation. Need to get myself one of those (although hopefully for better reasons than just being able to turn down other guys). Ah, the complications of being too popular and attractive, eh?
