Lunch with Oxford Boy

After I'd submitted his application to the O&C, I got an e-mail from Oxford Boy, where he mentioned that we hadn't seen each other in ages and suggesting that we get together for lunch. I figured I could use the excuse to go into the office, and so we made plans to meet for lunch this afternoon.

We met at our usual place, and it was good to see him, looking very dapper in his suit from the office, and amusing me with his usual refusal to wear his glasses, except when he needed them to read the menu. Kind of funny when you think about it, that he must see me in a slightly fuzzy glow at all times. Maybe that's why he thinks I look good?

I was surprised at one point in the conversation when he mentioned that he's been seeing someone...I'd long figured that we were just friends at this point, but I guess that makes it quite official. Okay, so that's fine, but then it was interesting when he mentioned that he was reluctant to bring her to the hash for fear of how other people would react. "A certain blonde?" I laughed. "Which blonde?" he replied. Oh dear, more than one?

So we chatted a bit about that, about what had been going on with him and Caroline, while I tried my best to straddle the line of protecting Caroline's confidences while still letting him know that she just...hadn't been interested that way. Not really a rejection of him, but sometimes it just doesn't work. And it's kind of weird, because Caroline seems to have rejected so many nice boys, while making terrible choices with other boys! So I told him what I knew, that they'd made out after karaoke once, and that they'd been out a few times.

He even provided a bit more enlightenment about the Christmas party, where he claimed that he'd thought it was "game on" at that point, and then had been a bit surprised when she hadn't wanted to pursue it. It was funny to me, because that very evening, Matt and I had been talking, and he'd been watching the two of them saying, "I think Caroline is into him", and I'd been arguing that no, she liked him as a friend, but not more than that. How funny, that we'd each had the male and female perspective, and we'd both been right about what we'd seen.

So having covered the story of one blonde, there was another... So him and Lucia, eh? Who knew Lucia was the center of so much relationship drama? And I guess it makes it pretty clear that Oxford Boy's type is tall, skinny blondes... I never stood much of a chance then, but as I told him, "Alls well that ends well." So everyone is doing alright in the end.

He asked about my own romantic life and I told him a little of the Tall South African, although making it sound like our age difference was less than it was. Oxford Boy was so surprised to learn my own age, that I realised he just wasn't the type to be comfortable dating an older woman. So friends it is then. And he told me to enjoy my little bit of fun, but to remember that's all it is, for it will surely end badly. Good advice, which I know in my heart to be true. Best to keep that in mind.
