Circus Dinner

At our last community meeting, my work community decided that we would have our "Christmas party" in January, so as to have something to look forward to in the New Year. After all, December is busy enough with parties, but January is quite a dead month. So I was quite happy to have something to go out to, after a relatively quiet weekend and quiet month so far.

The plan was to go to a place called "Circus", where apparently acrobats and circus performers would do circus acts right on the table as you ate. It sounded utterly bizarre to me, but I was really eager to see what it would be like.

When I arrived, it was still the cocktail hour, so I found a familiar face and we went to the cocktail bar to order. The girl I was with ordered off the menu, but I'm so keen to see what real cocktail makers come up with, that I asked the bartender to make me something with lychee, and left it to him to create me something all my own. When he brought it out to me later, I had to admit that it was quite delicious!

Cocktails lasted for about a half-hour, and then we were all exhorted to sit down by a woman acrobat doing acrobatics while dressed as a sailor hanging from an anchor above the table. So we all grabbed seats, and I found myself seated with an older woman who I vaguely work with on my left, and a reasonably cute young guy on my right. The young guy acted and sounded so much like my friend Justin, it really took all my willpower not to call him "Justin" at random points during the night...I rather wondered if they were related, the resemblance was so uncanny!

Food was served on sharing platters, and while there wasn't a ton of it, they certainly kept us distracted by pouring plenty of wine. (As I pointed out to someone earlier, the best part about having a "New Year's Party" as opposed to a "Christmas Party" is that you get to drink champagne instead of mulled wine!)

The acts were quite good, with an acrobat followed by a drag queen singer, then a female acrobat on silks, and then a male acrobat in drag. It was very funny as the male acrobat in drag seemed really taken by the guy sitting on my right, and kept putting feather boas on him and doing a really neat trick where he flipped the guy's glass of red wine upside down without spilling it, and then drank it. We were so impressed by the trick that we tried it ourselves later, and got red wine all over the table!

Indeed, as I was so bored by other company, I did my best to charm the pants off him throughout the evening. He stayed with me until we were about the last 10 people in the restaurant, but then at the very end of the evening he got up to use the loo and then left without saying goodbye to me. A lot of people did that, in fact. Also kissed only on one cheek. I think I spent the evening in a weird vortex where polite social behaviour includes only one kiss and no formal goodbyes. So not my usual thing.

Still, I suppose I can't complain too much, as it was an entertaining evening, and a good night out with a different crowd, doing something I would definitely not normally do. Glad to cross that one off my list!
