Running in Westferry

The Young Dutchman decided to work from home today, so we had a nice, relaxing day together. He just sits over on the couch, and I do my work, and he realises quite how late in the day it is sometimes before I shower when I'm working from home.

Of course, he's also a bit distracting, and his latest is encouraging me to take "study breaks" to watch episodes of the television show "Community", which I have to admit is irreverently hilarious. And so, at 5 PM, he encouraged me to sit down with him to watch one, which led to two, which led to three, and then I SERIOUSLY had to run if I was going to make it to the hash on time.

Already running late, I then made things worse by not paying attention to the DLR train stops, and accidentally rode two stops past where I was supposed to get off. So then I had to run downstairs to get over to another platform just to go back the way I came.

Despite all of this, I still arrived on time to the run, and realised it was a warmer night than I had anticipated, and so ditched my extra layer, and joined the crowds outside to go running. I decided to carry my iPhone with me so I could use the "Runtastic" app, which is really fun to run with.

For the first half of the run, I started to wonder if my extra running (not that there's been much of it) has been helping, as I felt like I was keeping a pretty decent pace. It was only later that I realised I was merely halfway through the run. I'd been given a map of the run by one of the hares, which did come in handy when the group got a bit lost. But we got ourselves back on track, and even ended up running through a shopping mall as part of the run! Particularly funny was when we dashed through a Waitrose, much to the amazement of the surprised grocery shoppers. It was quite a big Waitrose too, I shall have to go back and visit it sometime! We got quite a lot of funny looks from the security guards, but even I was amazed at how far you could run within a shopping mall.

We then stopped to regroup for a drink stop in the small park above Canary Wharf station, where we had rum, since it was "International Talk Like a Pirate Day", and some people had dressed as pirates. One guy had been carrying a toy water-gun as part of his costume (he was a Somali pirate), and apparently one of the CCTV cameras picked up on it, and we had a bunch of security guards on us quite quickly. However, luckily the thing was made of clear and orange plastic and was VERY obviously a water-gun, so they let us get away with it.

Finally we made our way back to the pub, where in the course of socialising, I found myself talking to a really rather cute guy. I even did think to myself, "Wouldn't it be nice if he turned out to be smart, and he would buy me drinks all evening?" I guess it's my charmed life, because it turns out that he went to Oxford, and he did indeed buy me drinks all evening long. (Although to be honest, I think he was a bit torn in figuring out whether he liked me or my friend Lucia better. Me though, I wasn't really bothered, because he was nice to me and Lucia IS lovely, so it's a win-win all around. And he did have a slightly more dorky-yet-sweet friend to talk to who was also a very nice chap.

Lucia also told me the surprising news that Princess and his girlfriend had broken up. I was glad for her to tell me, as I'm always the type of person to put their food in their mouth with things like that. It was both a surprise (they had seemed to get along so well!) and not (Princess had never seemed like the type for committed relationships), but it was definitely the news of the day.

This particular pub is popular with the hash because every time we go there, the whole thing turns into a giant dance party. There was a guy playing live music, and they brought out lots of sparkly cowboy hats, and before you knew it everyone was out on the dance floor. One guy grabbed me to do some jive dancing with me, and although I don't really know how to do jive, at least I'm pretty decent at following a guy who knows how to lead. Indeed, afterwards he complimented me on my coordination, but the secret is really to just stay light on your feet and always dance on your toes. Then you are ready to jump any which way you are told to go.

Finally, after the cute Oxford boy had bought both me and Lucia more drinks, we finally decided that at nearly midnight, it was time to head home. So I made my way home with both of them and another hasher. He left us early along the journey, but it turns out that we'll see him on Saturday at a party we're all going to, so it's all good. I finally made make my way all of the way home, to discover that the Young Dutchman had simply stayed in all evening, and was already in bed by 12:30 AM. How lame...
