Frustrating Date...Finally

So after after I got stood up (sorta) on Wednesday, the guy in question actually e-mailed me to beg for one more chance. As I wrote to him, "You do realise that if I were a smart girl, I would simply arch an eyebrow at this point and say, 'You're kidding, right?'" However, at this point I kind of wanted to see it through, so when he suggested meeting for drinks after my planned squash game with Doro on Monday, I figured there was no harm in it.

Doro actually ended up cancelling on me at the last minute, but I got stuck at work anyway, so it was really okay. Plus, it meant that I could show up looking all glamorous and put together, instead of having to come all sweaty from a game of squash, having recently raced through the shower.

So I made my way to the bar at 7:15 (our designated meeting time) and sat down to wait. And wait. And finally at 7:40, he did indeed show up (although to be fair, he did text me to say he was running behind, so it's not like I was honestly worried about being stood up).

When he arrived, he got us drinks, and we sat down to chat. I have to say, he reminded me of my friend AM, who is an absolutely great guy, but just doesn't quite give off the suave vibe of a guy who wants to seduce you. And that was really the problem here, as when I'd originally met this guy, we'd had a few drinks and he was very obviously into me in a very not-I-just-want-to-be-friends kind of way. And now we were stuck with this incredible awkwardness of it being a Monday night and this having been built up for ages and now we had no idea what to do about it all.

As we chatted, we had some laughs (let's face it, I can charm anyone), but I just couldn't quite get it over to a more seductive vibe. After we had sat for ages with empty glasses, I thought to relax things a bit more by offering to get more drinks, but he turned me down as he had patients in the morning (he's a dental student). And also, being a student, he talked so much about how little money he had, to the point where he biked everywhere to save on Tube fare. Gosh, he was still good-looking, but this was getting worse and worse. And I'd never thought that I needed to date a guy with money, but you do realise it makes things awkward when there are expenses I never think about (what's another round of drinks?) that for your companion are big deals.

We chatted as well about how he'd been discharged from the Territorial Army (the UK version of the Reserves) due to his having his appendix out, which of course raised my eyebrows, as I'm not a fan of anybody in the military really. But he talked enthusiastically about how he couldn't wait to get back.

Finally, the evening ended a mere 2 hours later at 9:30, with him giving me a quick peck on each cheek and dashing for his train. Leaving me quite frustrated that the evening had gone so poorly, and me not quite sure why. After all, we didn't seem all that well-suited, but I've just been feeling so restless lately, it would have been nice to have somebody take the edge off, even if it wasn't anything serious.

When I got home, I rather wondered if I had some huge smudge on my face that I had been unaware of, or my outfit had been more unflattering than I realised. Yet I actually thought I looked about as good as I can ever look, which basically means that whatever he was not attracted to, there was nothing really I could have done about it.

After all, there can be people whose company I enjoy, like the Young Dutchman, who I don't desire and he doesn't desire me. And isn't that what we all really want? Not just to have somebody like us, but to truly desire us?
