Saturday Birthday Party

I got off to a slow start in the morning (was barely out of bed by noon!) due to my late night the night before. In fact, I was barely up and running in time to make it out to the hash committee meeting that evening.

I was almost going to be on time to the meeting, but as it turned out, the Central Line got shut down just as soon as I arrived at the station (apparently due to someone trespassing on the tracks). So I then had to hop on a bus, then make it to another station, and then take a circuitous Tube route to get to my destination. What was supposed to be a quick 40-minute trip turned into a 1.5 hour saga.

Turns out the committee meeting was pretty pointless anyway, as the pub where they'd chosen to have the meeting was so loud, that we couldn't hear anything. Nearly the whole meeting was just people sitting right next to each other talking, as nobody else could hear anything. A total disaster, all of the way around.

Not like everyone present was really into the meeting anyway, because I seemed to be one of the few people there who wasn't hungover. (All of that dancing after the champagne meant I was perfectly sober by the time I got home and went to bed). Apparently, everyone was originally supposed to go Ceilidh dancing with Dan the night before, but then Dan had announced that he would be bringing his new girlfriend to Lousie's birthday party (that we were all just about to go to).

Now here's where I look like an idiot. I'd realised that something must be going on between Dan and Louise, after she went down to Jersey to visit him "just for fun" and always seemed to be out on events where he was there. And as much as she talked about how she stayed in his spare room, I thought myself to be extra clever and percieved that something was going on.

As it turns out, I was the idiot who was totally out-of-the-loop, because when Dan announced that he was going to be bringing his new girlfriend to Louise's birthday party, Lousie got totally upset, and everybody boycotted the Ceilidh dancing in favour of just having a crazy night of drinking with Louise to try and cheer her up. And apparently Dan totally did not realise he'd done anything wrong.

This led to an interesting discussion with Roofie later on the evening (who I have to note was very sharply dressed and looking quite fine, a surprising change from all of our usual sweaty running gear) about how getting involved with people from the hash is a dangerous prospect. He admitted, "Even I haven't done well to completely live by that maxim", (I assume referring to his relatively well-known hook-up with EmRae), "but it just seems to get messy."

I wonder if his is advice to be heeded, because earlier as we were walking to the birthday party, I was walking along and chatting with Kitty. And I told her about B, and then remembered that he actually mentioned that he'd been to the hash before (apparently he came for the first time whilst I was gone in the US). And so I told her his name, and suddenly she started, saying she knew that name (although she seemed to be searching for why). And it was so strange, because while previously she'd been all encouraging and girly and saying he sounded great, in a heartbeat she changed her tune. Her tone completely changed, and she said, "Well, it sounds like you have some reservations, so maybe you should listen to them..." Well, I didn't have reservations quite so much until you responded like that! I wonder what she knows that I don't? Definitely very disconcerting, and reminding me that when I first met B I actually thought he was with someone else. Perhaps I'm still actually missing the message here.... Although a key one seems to be, "Don't hook up with people from the hash!"

I spent most of my time talking to Roofie, and a bit with Sarah, a new girl that I'm quite fond of. Yet for the most part, the company was a bit disappointing. Roofie's brother wasn't there (and Roofie himself wasn't drinking and went home early as he was running a race the next day), and DM wasn't there either, although I'd told him about this party. I'd even sent a text to the silly boy telling him I would be here this evening, a last-ditch chance giving him the benefit of the doubt. I didn't really expect him to show up (and actually it would have been somewhat awkward if he did), but still, it was one more person who wasn't there.

I'd actually been invited to another drinks party with some club friends, and I would have ditched this party to go to the other one, except I'd forgotten to bring the address! If only I'd had an iPhone, I absolutely would have looked up the info and gone. One more reason I think I need to get one...

Late in the evening Princess showed up, and it was nice to see him. He seemed delighted to see me, and in the midst of all of the confusing mess of relationships that is the hash, ours is one of the few that seems to have survived all of the drama. Just gave him a hug and a kiss and chatted for a while, as he'd just come in from Vienna, and so we had stories to share. Although after a bit I was just tired and wanted to go home. Princess protested that I was leaving so soon, but I pointed out that although he'd just arrived, I'd been there for hours and wanted some sleep! Made my way home, and was quite glad to not be racing for the last Tube for once!
