Drinks with Joel and Doro

In the morning, I saw a notice on quite a few friends' Facebook pages that Rowan Williams was set to become the next Master of Magdalene College, our dear college in Cambridge. And I thought to myself, "It can't be THAT Rowan Williams, can it?" A quick Google search turned up the truth however, that it was indeed the one and same Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Holy cow, and he was going to be stepping down as the Archbishop of Canterbury to become the Master of OUR little college? Wow.

So we e-mailed back and forth about this exciting news, and our whole little band, Tristan, Doro, and Joel were all excited that we were due to meet for drinks for the evening anyway, and now we had this good news to celebrate. I even started e-mailing with JG throughout the day and encouraged him to come along, although alas he had dressed for casual Friday at work and was unable to join us in the end.

When I arrived at the club, Doro and Tristan were already there and drinking champagne to celebrate Doro's achievement of becoming a published scientist, with a recent paper she'd authored having been accepted for publication. I joined them, and even bought a second bottle when the first was gone.

We were then joined by Joel and enjoyed a good catch-up, although as usual it was more Joel interviewing others rather than us getting any news about him. We were then joined by Tristan's latest girlfriend (who I'd met recently at the wine tasting event at the Carlton Club), and the two of them had to move on to the next birthday party they were due at.

As it was then past 8PM and happy hour was over at the club but still going at the Lansdowne, I suggested we decamp to an alternate location. So we walked up to the Lansdowne, and although Doro was thinking about going home, we persuaded her to join us for one more drink.

"One more drink" turned into three bottles of wine, and a merry time was had by all. Of course, as a result, the details of the evening now escape me, except to say that Joel desperately fancies Doro, but of course she has a boyfriend (and he's still stupidly involved with the girl he works with). So I basically sat back with amusement while he mooned over Doro, Doro completely ignored him, and I socialised with other people I recognised. We finally left at 1 AM, which I think is a sign of a good night! And Joel drunkenly texted me, "I really fancy your friend..." Well yes Joel, we know that, but as you're too much of an idiot to get your act together with girls, do you really think I'm going to let you break up the happy relationship she's in? Plus, I think she's too clever for that anyway.

Still, an excellent night out with good company and good friends. Definitely wish I had more of those!
