It was Mom and Dad's last day in London, and the first day my club was going to be open again after it's August closing. So we went out to have lunch at my club, the first day it was open again.
When we got to the club, it was obvious that they were still finishing up some last-minute work, as the vacuums were still going and people were still furiously scrubbing the brass handrails. Yet, the club retained it's overall opulence and gradeur, so I could show my folks around, sneak library books back onto the shelves, and give them a tour of the place. We went through the grand library, games room, silent library, the library terrace, the reading room, the member's bar, the business suite, the pool room, and the squash courts. They didn't say too much, but I wonder if it's just because they were trying to take it all in.
We had lunch in the Coffee Room, which was a fun experience for my parents, as dining at my club is a big production with silver service, they change the cutlery depending upon what you are having for your meal, and the food is amazing. I was pleased as even my father seemed to enjoy going to my club, as much as he'd fussed and complained about having to bring a jacket and tie (required for male guests).
We left the club at 2:15, and made it home with only moments to spare before I was due to begin at 3 PM conference call. So I asked the person I was talking to if I could be 10 minutes late, said good-bye to my parents, and then packed them off to the airport.
Then spent the rest of the afternoon working, hearing stories from my flatmate, Emily, about her trip to California, and catching up on my social calendar. Emily asked if I might be willing to go into the office more (annoying for me, as I'd much prefer to work in my pajammas all day, but a reasonable request), so we worked on coordinating our Google Calendars, which then of course made me set about the task of filling up my social calendar.
I was pleased to learn I'd gotten tickets to an inter-club younger member's ceilidh on the 25th (basically Scottish dancing with a bunch of younger members from other posh clubs like mine), scheduled drinks with a friend and her failed internet date (she thought he was a nice guy, but not date-worthy, but thought she might drag out a few of his friends and a few of her friends to see what we all thought of each other), and going to a leaving dinner for a guy I know on Saturday and a bunch of his random friends. Got a text from the woman who organizes polo tournaments asking if I'd be willing to play this weekend, but I think I might pass on that. But steadily filling up the calendar with social engagements until I don't have a day to spare, but that's just the way I like it.
No word from the guy I want to go have drinks with, but I told him we'd sort things out after my parents left, so trying not to freak out when he didn't ring five minutes after they walked out the door. Plus, after three weeks of eating out every day, perhaps having some more time to hit the gym is not such a bad thing? Still, keep your fingers crossed for me...
