After last night's late night, my cold was still knocking me sideways, and I wasn't sure how I was going to make it to the rugby that afternoon. I managed to drag myself up to the gym, but was quite relieved as I came home to discover texts from both Lex and Matt saying they weren't going to rugby. By the time I texted Sweetheart to say I wasn't going either, he texted back, "Already ahead of you..."
But later in the evening he called to ask, "Did I want to come over and watch a movie?"
Although I was tempted to stay in to try to rest up and recover, a part of me was also suffering from a bit of cabin fever, and I just wanted to get out of my flat for a bit. So I said sure, through on jeans and a sweatshirt, and hopped on a bus over to his. Quick journey, I was there in 15 minutes flat, and got to see his new place.
A charming little one-bedroom flat, perhaps not quite as nice as his old place, but with a back garden that I'm sure will be nice in the summer. He gave me a quick tour, and then microwaved some dinner for us as I settled down on the couch while we picked a film.
Through his amazing streaming set-up, we were able to rent a film on-demand, and picked a weird French film called "Rust and Bone". Kind of strange plot, where this guy who is a single father travels to his sister's house in a town near the shore (why he was moving or where the kid's mother was is unclear), and gets a job as a nightclub bouncer. One night he meets a woman who is a trainer of killer whales at a Sea World-like show when she gets into a fight at the club. We then follow her the next day where she is involved in an accident during the show, and loses both of her legs at the knee.
After she gets out of the hospital, she calls the nightclub bouncer (because if I'd ever been through a traumatic accident, the first person I would call would be some guy I'd met only once a few months previously), and even weirder, he shows up to go out on sort of a "date" with her where they go swimming in the ocean.
They strike up this sort of friendship, she the girl with no legs and he the single dad (who is doing kind of a rubbish job at that, as he forgets to pick up his son at school because he's having sex with a random girl he met at the gym). The leaps in the storyline were getting kind of hard to follow, to be honest...
Then the legless girl and this guy start sleeping together, which then meant I found myself watching these incredibly awkward scenes with lots of naked people with Sweetheart sitting right next to me. Not cuddled up on the couch right next to me, thank goodness, but still weird.
In the end, this guy takes up professional fighting, runs off abandoning the legless girl and his kid for a while, but eventually after an accident with his kid, he comes back to the legless girl and the new family lives happily ever after. I really don't understand foreign films sometimes.
After the movie, we sat around talking for a while about all sorts of random things, like his ex-girlfriends and what they did to become exes, before I finally realised it was late and I was tired, and also that I was sick and needed to go home. Sweetheart still gave me a kiss on the lips to say good-bye (dangerous way to pick up my cold), and I made it home in the freezing and bitter cold. Good to get out of the flat though, and fun to spend a night at Sweetheart's...
